ELISHA AND THE WIDOW

Widow’s story of obedience

The story of the young widow in 2 Kings 4:1-7 is a very interesting one. Here was a lady who was a young widow, in debt and desperate. The creditor was going to take her two sons if she did not pay up. The woman’s husbands death came unexpectedly and left her struggling financially. In Biblical times, the creditor had to right to repossess anything belonging to the debtor to collect the debt and this included children..

“What have you got in your house?” asked Elisha.

“There is nothing left except a jar of oil,” the woman answered.

The woman had handed over anything she owned one by one until there was just a jar of oil left and still it was not enough to satisfy the creditors.

Olive oil was in those days considered to be valuable because of its healing qualities.

Elisha advised the young woman to go and borrow as many empty jars  from the neighbours as she could lay her hands on and bring them home. Then Elisha instructed her to pour a little oil in each empty jar which she did as Elisha instructed, and then something amazing happened. The oil continued to flow out until all of the jars were filled.

The delighted young woman asked Elisha, “What shall we do with the oil now?”

Elisha replied, “Sell the oil in order to pay off all of your debts, then your sons and you can live on what is left over.”

The woman and her two young sons left Elisha’s presence happy and debt free because of the miracle of the oil.

There is a ruthless creditor who wants to rob you of your joy and his name is Satan but the Lord is ready to fill your cup to overflowing with His joy.

COMMENT: This piece of scripture shows you what can be achieved when you are obedient to the Lord. It also teaches us that when we make use of what is available to us miracles can happen.
